Actually 4.5 stars, but I'm a huge pastry and dessert fan, so I'm rounding up this time!
What I've had at Porto's:
- Mango mousse cake
- Cheese roll
- Guava roll
- Guava and Cheese roll
- Guava smoothie
- Red velvet cupcake
- Tres leches
- Raspberry mousse
- Coconut mousse
- Lemon mousse
- Pretty much all their individual desserts!
I got nothing to complain about, except their guava smoothie was a bit powdery at the end, but oh well. The deliciousness of all the cakes and pastries that I've had here overrides any complaint that I can have at this place, including their crazy long lines once a while.
My next goal from this place is to try all their other pastries at least once and then I'll probably move on to try their potato balls (shocking, I haven't tried these yet) and sandwiches. But hey, my original reason of coming to Porto's is for their pastries and desserts.. and oh yeah, of all the great things I've heard about this bakery.
I wish they were open later, since they're closed after I come home from work, but it's completely understandable. It just makes the Porto's experience more special. :)
had the potato balls & the cheese rolls...B-O-M-B!!!
long line but moves fast....hard to find a table
My friends rave about this place, and I see why. They're pastries and desserts are so delicious! I had a feta sandwich, and it was not only delicious, but surprisingly filling! Definitely going there again, but it's really difficult to get to from the USC campus.
I'm probably going to receive hate mail because of my review.
Porto's is good. I don't fantasize about eating here though like some of my friends do. Maybe I'm just over it because my company provides it regularly for our Friday breakfast and caters it for some of our special luncheons....
Anyhow, the potato balls are good.
The meat pies can be greasy. Everyone at my job freaking looses their mind when these are brought. It's just some hamburger meat in a pastry.....to each one's own.
Maybe I should go with what I do like....
The guava strudel is delish.
The chocolate croissant is bomb, better heated so the chocolate bars melt inside.
The croissants overall are good, crisp on the outside by soft on the inside.
Old fashioned cinnamon roll, good but can be dry sometimes.
What I do think is cool are their custom label cookies. For example when the inauguration of Obama took place, we received cookies with Obama's face on them lol.
sometimes waiting in line is a drag. sometimes you score a free sample of some delectable baked good that makes up for the wait.
the cheese omelette breakfast sandwich was buttery and crispy, with a little tang of mustard and melted cheese oozing out the sides. i just finished a zumba class across the street. i deserve it, right?
Apple strudel, YUM.
I was anticipating a sugar explosion in my mouth, but it wasn't too sweet, which I really liked.
Got my friend a pastry too and she loved it.
Need to try more (savory pastries!) here before I give this place five stars, but Porto's, you're well on your way.
OMG, LOVE PORTO'S! Their cheese rolls are AMAZING and really affordable too! Service is pretty fast because you never really have to wait too long in line. Their other pastries are pretty good too but I'd definitely try the cheese rolls here. I know "Cheese Rolls" sound pretty good but it's more like a sweet cream cheese-ish kind of taste so of course it's delicious!
Last weekend was the first time I'd ever been to Porto's, but it was so delicious that I had to go back again before coming back to Northern California.
The first time my friends and I went was right after having a delicious lunch courtesy of the Kogi BBQ truck. Seeing as I was too full for real food, I opted to get sweets for desserts. I randomly pointed at whatever looked good. My first swag was a red velvet cupcale, a double-dipped white chocolate/dark chocolate strawberry, tiramisu, an eclair and a medium caramel macchiato.
The second time I went was for a proper lunch meal as well as desserts. I got two meat buns and a potato ball for savory, then topped it off with a dark chocolate cupcake, another red velvet cupcake, another tiramisu and a mocha something-or-other. My drink of choice this time was a white chocolate mocha.
First off, the caramel macchiato was twice the size of a Starbucks tall but half the price. The tiramisu was absolutely delicious. I am not particularly a big fan of red velvet, but I do like it once in a while... however, Porto's red velvet cupcake was amazing, especially considering how cheap it was! Unfortunately, the strawberry was pretty forgettable and I didn't actually like the eclair at all, but it didn't bother me considering how great everything else was.
The meat buns were a blast of semi-sweet outside and savory inside. This along with the fried potato ball were not at all what I anticipated, but were incredibly pleasing surprises nonetheless.
Especially noteworthy, pricing and service. Both times each came out to under $15, which is a freaking steal considering how many sweets I got. Additionally, both times I went were right around the chaotic lunch hours, but staff were so polite.
I'm definitely going to make it a point to come back here as much as I can when I'm in Southern California!
Definitely the Cuban sandwich is my favorite sandwich to get at Porto's. Everything is fresh, and warm. It's so odd that they have so many locations now, but each branch seems like its always homemade.
Yea the wait can be annoying, but its worth it.
Potato Balls, and empanadas. Need I say more?
If you haven't been yet please take a trip to get some amazing baked goods!
The price definitely makes the wait and drive worth it!
This is one of the very few places in the LA area that makes me a little depressed when I have to go back home to the Bay Area. Seriously. The pastries aren't exactly out of this world, but they're very solid and there's a large variety of things they offer that are above average or just plain great. In fact, my friends and I visited this place first when we arrived in LA and this was our last stop before leaving. Their service was friendly and patient no matter how busy it was. I found that to be a major plus since a lot of places would turn lethargic or grumpy during rush hour. Everything's very reasonably priced, so you can walk away with a ton of stuff for $15. So I'll write a quick run down of the things I did try.
Red velvet cupcake: Enough sugar in it to make my Inca Kola taste bland. I haven't had Inca Kola in about a decade, so I barely remember what it tasted like back then. I seriously could have sworn it was sweeter. Anyway, the cake was moist. The cream cheese frosting was thick and incredibly sweet. So, if you need to fulfill an intense sweet tooth real quick, go for this one.
Apple Strudel: It's a typical well done apple strudel. I was a deer caught in the headlights when I walked up to the counter, so I just picked one of the random strudels covered in powdered sugar. This one did not fail me at all.
Cubano sandwich: This is the first time I've had a Cubano sandwich in a long time. It came with plantain chips too, just like the real deal Cuban plates. Forget those half-assed TGI-McFunster recreations of this classic sandwich, this one's the real deal. The bread was soft, crusty, and buttery (much like the bread you get at a nice steak house that has a good in house bread maker). The meats were pretty good. It's not a monsterous sandwich since it's pretty much squashed down, but it's quite filling. Deceptively so. The bread they used was enough to get me a little giddy. ONLY $5 for this, you kidding me!?
Potato balls: I'm sure Epic Meal Time wouldn't hesitate to make a basketball sized version of this. For now, the golf ball sized ones at Portos are pretty darn good. It's just a mashed potato ball filled with seasoned ground beef and deep fried. Ridiculously simple concept and ridiculously good.
Other pastries: Not much to say here. Solid fruit danishes, that cheese filled pastry I JUST had was pretty good. Empanada was pretty good, flakier than I'm used to. The meat pie was pretty solid, sort of reminds me of the Chinese pastry filled with curry beef/chicken, but very slightly lighter with the crust. Their pastry folks put out a product that would equal a lot of big city French patisseries, IMO. I stocked up on a bunch of these on my way out and I'm still finishing up my boxes 3 days later.
